The Graphic Overlay Prototyping Process: File to Physical Part
Approving a vector file is only the first step. Building a production-grade graphic overlay prototype requires specific manufacturing controls. Here is the exact in-house workflow at BX-PANEL, from raw CAD file to physical sample.

Engineering and Material Setup
We run a Design for Manufacturability (DFM) review before cutting any material, checking color separations, LED placements, and ink bleed clearances. A Pantone color that looks correct on a monitor shifts when back-printed on polycarbonate; we correct this mathematically prior to printing.
We then assign the correct substrate—typically 0.2mm to 0.5mm PC or PET—and match the adhesive to the enclosure. Bonding to a textured powder-coated metal housing requires a different tack profile than smooth ABS plastic. We select the appropriate genuine 3M 467MP or 468MP adhesive directly from our internal stock to match the application.
Printing, Forming, and Die-Cutting
For standard industrial colors, we use traditional silkscreen printing to hold strict physical Pantone matches. For complex gradients or rapid validation, we utilize UV digital presses.
Once printed and cured, the PC/PET film is heat-embossed to form raised keys for tactile feedback. Following adhesive lamination, custom die tools or precision digital plotters cut the outer contours and internal display windows to exact tolerances.
Assembly and Physical Validation
If the design is a fully functional membrane switch prototype, our assembly team integrates the metal domes, spacer layers, and tail connectors.
Every prototype undergoes physical validation before shipping. We measure dome snap ratios, verify light transmission through display windows, and check die-cut dimensions against the raw CAD file. You receive verification of the surface finish and button clicks before the shipment leaves the facility.
Final Thoughts
Because we use the same equipment for prototyping as we do for mass production at our Xiamen facility, samples are completed in 5 to 7 days. More importantly, the approved prototype performs identically to the final volume run.
