Membrane Switch Tactile Feedback: Metal Domes vs. Polydomes

In noisy factory floors or heavy-duty environments, audible beeps aren’t enough. Operators rely entirely on physical tactile feedback to confirm a button press.

In membrane switch design, this comes down to two standard technologies: metal domes and polydomes. Here is a direct breakdown to help you spec the right option for your machine.

1. Metal Domes: The Heavy-Duty Choice

Metal domes are stamped stainless steel contacts that collapse when pressed, closing the circuit with a sharp snap.

  • The Pros:

    • Crisp “Click”: Delivers a high-contrast snap, easily felt even through thick safety gloves.

    • Custom Actuation Force: Ranges from 160g to 400g+. High forces prevent accidental triggers in high-vibration environments.

    • Durability: Exceeds 1 million cycles without losing physical integrity.

  • The Catch: Requires precise assembly. Without proper air vents in the spacer layer, air gets trapped, creating a sluggish “dead key”.

2. Polydomes: The Cost-Effective Alternative

A polydome eliminates the metal insert. Instead, a raised blister is thermoformed (embossed) directly into the polyester (PET) graphic overlay.

  • The Pros:

    • Cost-Effective: Fewer components mean a lower unit price and faster assembly.

    • Better Sealing: The continuous PET film naturally blocks dust and moisture.

    • Silent Operation: No metallic click, ideal for quiet environments like hospitals.

  • The Catch: The feedback is softer and “mushier.” More importantly, PET suffers from mechanical fatigue. Over hundreds of thousands of presses, the plastic loses its memory and flattens out, degrading the tactile feel long before the circuit fails.

3. The Engineer's Verdict: Which to Choose?

Match the switch directly to your operating environment:

  • Specify Metal Domes for: Industrial automation, CNC machining, and heavy equipment. If your machine vibrates or operators wear gloves, this is your only reliable choice.

  • Specify Polydomes for: Consumer electronics, household appliances, or cleanroom instruments. If operators use bare hands and budget is the priority, polydomes work perfectly.
